In just a couple of days, the 2022 Formula E: Accelerate tournament will be coming to a close. Bringing the best sim-racers in the world to London to compete for a share of the €100,000 prize pool and also for a chance to get into the cockpit of a real Formula E race car, the finals will conclude weeks of qualifying events that have been held all over the globe.
With the event taking place rather imminently, we recently had the chance to talk with the gaming director at Formula E, Kieran Holmes-Darby, to learn a little more about these finals and how they will take place. During that very interview, Holmes-Darby told us that the Accelerate finals will be held on the London E-Prix track, which has been created and designed to launch specifically alongside this event.
"What's exciting, and what definitely hasn't gone public yet but I'm happy to share is we've been working on a new track, we've been working on actually getting the London track into the game, and for the Accelerate final, we want to race on the London track," said Holmes-Darby. "Now, no one will have had access to that, which means you drop that on drivers on a Thursday and they've essentially got a day and a half to practice. That could be interesting from a podium perspective, we don't really know."
"In terms of everything else, it's pretty standard. We're going to follow the Formula E format of qualifying into races, so the best people will win, but who is going to be best on that track? I don't know."
As for who will be competing in the Accelerate finals, Holmes-Darby also shared some information about that.
"It's an absolutely stacked grid actually. I'm pleasantly surprised that all of the 'hero' names in the sim-racing world are going to be competing, because that's always great for our product. You've got Jarno Opmeer, you've got Frede Rasmussen, you've got your Bono [Huis], you've got the best people in the community on the grid."
