Efter flere dages intens diskussion omkring mods, og ikke mindst Valve og Bethesdas paner om at tage penge for mods til The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, kommer John Romero fra Id Software nu på banen.
Han afslører at t Id Software (der senest har lavet Rage) havde planer i samme dur for 20 år siden - dog med nogle enkelte, men vigtige, forskelle.
I et interview medGames Industry siger han:
"I've always believed that mod makers should be able to make money from their creations."
I stedet for at folk betaler for mods, så havde Id software andre ideer med at betale de personer der lavede de mest populære mods:
"In 1995, while we were making Quake, we had the idea to start a company called Id Net. This company would be the portal that players would connect to and play other mod maker's creations. It was to be a curated site, levels and mods chosen by us at Id, and if we put your content on our network we would pay you an amount equal to the traffic that your content drove to the site. The idea was that players would log in and be in a big level that felt like a castle with lots of doorway portals and signage that explained where you were going and what was there."
Det ville være en stor forskel, og vi ville nok have stået et helt andet sted i dag.
Men hvad mener i? Hvem skal tjene penge på mods - hvis der overhovedet er nogen der skal til at starte med?
