Selvom at Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull har sine fans, så anses den for at være seriens værste kapitel. Den er blevet kritiseret for blandt andet Shia Lebeoufs præstation, for meget CG-animation og en lettere flyvsk historie
Så hvad mener folkene bag gik galt? Ja, LucasArts-chef Kathleen Kennedy har forklaret lidt om situationen bag scenetæppet i et interview med Empire, hvor hun slår fast at de ikke sigtede efter at lave en dårlig film:
"You never set out to do anything except make a great movie. And sometimes you hit that perfectly, and sometimes you don't. In the case of 'Indy 4', I don't think there's any specific thing that any of us looked back on, except that we may not have had as strong a story as we wanted."
