The Boy and The Heron, Hayao Miyazakis seneste film, har fået en vældigt entusiastisk modtagelse af det japanske publikum såvel som kritikere, og mange har allerede erklæret den en af instruktørens hidtil bedste værker. Filmen fik for nyligt en fremvisning ved Toronto Film Festival, hvor den blev introduceret af ingen ringere end Guillermo del Toro, som tidligere har udtrykt sin kærlighed til animationsfilm. Ifølge del Toro er Miyazaki animationsfilmens mester, og han sammenligner den japanske filminstruktør med Mozart.
Under filmens præsentation sagde han følgende:
"Animation is film, and tonight's film goes beyond that. Animation is hard. We are privileged enough to be living in a time where Mozart is composing symphonies. Miyazaki-san is a master of that stature, and we are so lucky to be here...He has changed the medium that he started in, revolutionized it, proved over and over again that is a tremendous work of art."
