George R.R. Martin har skrevet på The Winds of Winter i mange år. 14 år, for at være præcis. Det var i juli 2010 han fortalte, at han var gået i gang med at skrive på efterfølgeren til Dance of the Dragons. På det tidspunkt gav Martin selv udtryk for, at håbede, den ville kunne blive skrevet lidt hurtigere end Dance of the Dragons, som kun tog seks år. Sådan blev det ikke.
Efter det sidste år blev kendt, at Martin skulle møde sin forlægger i London, var der spekulationer om, at bogen muligvis var ved at være færdig, og at en annoncering var nært forestående. Det kan forfatteren dog nu fortælle via sin blog, ikke er tilfældet, og at The Winds of Winter slet ikke er klar endnu:
"Last year, when I mentioned seeing my Voyager editor in London, the internet went nuts, throwing up all sorts of theories about how this meant that WINDS OF WINTER was done and a huge announcement was at hand. Uhhhh... sorry guys, but no. That's not how it works.
It does NOT signify that some momentous announcement is at hand. It doesn't signify anything, actually... except a desire to touch base, catch up, renew old contacts or make some new ones... and enjoy a nice meal. So calm down, please. When WINDS OF WINTER is done, the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement... where and when I cannot say."
