Hvis du ikke allerede er klar over det, blev det for nylig annonceret, at EA - udgiveren bag blandt andet Battlefield, EA Sports FC og Star Wars: Jedi - vil gå privat, da selskabet er ved at blive opkøbt af et konsortium bestående af den saudiske PIF, Silver Lake og Affinity Partners.
Handlen på 55 milliarder dollars har tiltrukket opmærksomhed fra amerikanske politikere, og det ser ud til, at nogle ikke vil lade aftalen gå igennem uden grundig gennemgang. I et brev til USA's finansminister Scott Bessent (fanget af Insider Gaming), skriver politikere som Elizabeth Warren og Richard Blumenthal, at de har "profound concern" over, at aftalen går igennem.
"We urge you and the Committee to apply searching scrutiny to this unprecedented, proposed foreign privatization of a major American technology and entertainment company," lyder det i brevet. "The proposed transaction poses a number of significant foreign influence and national security risks, beginning with the PIF's reputation as a strategic arm of the Saudi government. Saudi Arabia's desire to buy influence through the acquisition of EA is apparent on the face of the transaction—the investors propose to pay more than $10 billion above EA's trading value for a company whose stock has 'stagnated for half a decade' in an unpredictably volatile industry."
Vi har set politisk indblanding tidligere i Microsoft/Activision Blizzard-aftalen, og det er sandsynligt, at der også kan komme modstand mod EA-opkøbet. Når der er tale om transaktioner på så mange milliarder dollars, er der altid nogen, der hæver et øjenbryn.
