Den oprindelige skaber af God of War, David Jaffe er ikke imponeret over spin-off'en God of War: Sons of Sparta, et metroidvania hvor man følger en ung Kratos fra før han blev den store kriger vi kender og elsker fra God of War spillene.
I played a little over an hour of the new God of War game, God of War: Sons of Sparta! It's well made but generic and dull. It's also one of worst decisions the God of War team has ever made. It's very existence is super confusing. And offensive.

I en 9 minutter lang anmeldelse på YouTube ligger David Jaffe ikke fingre imellem og det er tydeligt, at han ikke er glad for det nye spil i serien - og heller ikke for Sonys beslutning om at lave dette spil:
This makes me really angry. Not just because I have a personal connection to the brand and the franchise, but because it shows such a collapse of the great creative work Sony has done in the past. The fact that they would think this is what people want from God of War, I don't know what to f*cking tell you. It's crap, it's dumb, it's stupid - I would say avoid this f*cking thing.
