Der synes at være mange gode bud på, hvorfor spilbranchen befinder sig i den kattepine, den befinder sig i. Måske er nogle jobs ved at blive erstattet med AI, måske er de generelle forhold på markedet blevet forværret af makroøkonomiske påvirkninger, eller måske... noget tredje? Flere gange har visse økonomiske vismænd peget på COVID-19, og at der i den periode blev investeret alt for mange penge i spilbranchen.
Mere specifikt siger tidligere PlayStation-chef Shuhei Yoshida i et interview til WhatCulture, at det faktisk var en slags illusion, en bjørnetjeneste:
"The shutdowns and layoffs and the cancellations are the result of these adjustments from the misjudgment that many companies made. I think it was super optimism of the time during Covid-19. The industry grew so much because [people] had to stay at home, and video games were the easiest and cheaper way to be entertained. So they saw this huge increase in growth of the industry, and many investors poured money into the sector, so these publishers over-hired, over-invested. They hired too many people. They invested in projects that they shouldn't have."
Som sagt er svaret sikkert en kombination af faktorer, men spørgsmålet er om hvorvidt en del af dette svar kan spores helt tilbage til COVID-19 - hvad tror du?
