Trods vedvarende rygter om at Games for Windows Live-tjenesten snart ville lukke, såvel som det faktum at adskillige udviklere har droppet tjensten og erstattet den med Valves Steamworks i ældre spil, insisterer Microsoft på at GFWL ikke går nogen vegne.
I en melding til Game Informer skriver Microsoft, at selvom Games for Windows Marketplace er lukket, så vil loginserverne og selve GFWL-klienten stadig fungere.
"We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future", lyder det.
Games for Windows Live-tjenesten har længe fået hug for at være for besværlig at bruge, såvel som at knytte ens savegames til en online-profil. Flere udviklere, herunder Rocksteady og 2K Games, har droppet GFWL fra titler som Batman: Arkham Asylum og Bioshock 2 til fordel for Steam, efter der slap dokumenter ud som sagde at tjenesten ville lukke helt ned i løbet af juli måned.
