Meget af kritikken går på at Overwatch har mikrotransaktioner, på trods af at spillet ikke er et free-to-play-spil. Kister kan optjenes ved at spille spillet, men også ved at bruge rigtige penge.
Blizzard har tidligere udtalt, at loot-kisterne i stedet garantere gratis nye helte og baner til spillet, og kun indeholder kosmetisk indhold.
