Nintendo Switch er, ligesom Nintendo altid har opereret, lidt af et sats, og handler mere om at give forbrugerne adgang til et helt nyt koncept, snarere end en maskine der kan konkurrere med Sony og Microsoft. Mange var skeptiske omkring konsollens design, og derigennem dens muligheder for succes. I blandt disse kritikere finder vi faktisk Pokémon Company-chefen Tsunekazu Ishihara.
I et interview med Bloomberg fortæller Ishihara, at han ikke troede på konsollen i starten, men at han tydeligvis har taget fejl:
"I told Nintendo that Switch wouldn't be a success before it went on sale because I thought that in the age of the smartphone, no one would carry out a game console."
"It's obvious I was wrong. I came to realize the key to a successful game is quite simple: software with absolute quality leads sales of hardware. Playing style can be flexible if the software is attractive enough."
Dog holder han fast i, at konsollen endnu kun er blevet solgt til fans af Nintendo, og at længerevarende succes opnås kun ved at række udover denne forbrugergruppe:
"Currently, it's popular among the early adopters, but there needs to be one more step to attract a wider audience. I see more potential in Switch, but one shouldn't overestimate its potential."
