Lige siden Star Wars-fans så karakteren Rey, så undrede de sig over hvem hun mon var, men Rian Johnson gjorde som sagt en dyd ud af at chokere publikummet ved at afsløre i The Last Jedi, at hendes forældre "ikke var nogen overhovedet". Netop denne afsløring blev der ikke taget synderligt godt imod, og noget kunne tyde på, at Rise of Skywalker-instruktøren J.J. Abrams har i sinde at ændre den forklaring lidt.
I et interview med Empire fortæller manuskriptforfatter Chris Terrio, at filmen igen vil fokusere på hvem Rey egentlig er, og hvordan hendes ophav ser ud.
"One of them is a simple [question]: 'Who is Rey?' Which is a question that people not only wonder about quite literally, but wonder about in the spiritual sense. How can Rey become the spiritual heir to the Jedi? We kept coming back to 'Who is Rey?', and how can we give the most satisfying answer to that not only factually--because obviously people are interested in whether there's more to be learned of Rey's story--but more importantly who is she as a character? How will she find the courage and will and inner strength and power to carry on what she's inherited?"
Terrio lyder netop som om at spørgsmålet ikke er besvaret endnu, som kunne betyde at hendes forældre måske alligevel ikke er "nobodies".
