Kotick tager livet af spilbranchen

Tim Schafer sviner Activision-chefen

Tim Schafer, manden bag spil som Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts og senest Brutal Legend har i et interview langet hårdt ud efter Bobby Kotick, topchefen i Blizzard Activision, som han mener tager livet af branchen.

Netop Brutal Legend skulle oprindeligt have været udgivet af Activision, men blev droppet efter deres fusion med Vivendi Games. Herefter samlede EA udgivelsesrettighederne op, men Activision mente at det stred mod deres aftale, hvilket førte til et længere juridisk slagsmål mellem udgiveren og Schafers udviklerhus, Double Fine Productions.

Og efter den omgang har Schafer ikke ligefrem høje tanker om Kotick. I et interview i forbindelse med Develop-konferencen, sagde han følgende:

"His obligation is to his shareholders. Well, he doesn't have to be as much of a dick about it, does he? I think there is a way he can do it without being a total prick. It seems like it would be possible. It's not something he's interested in".

"He makes a big deal about not liking games, and I just don't think that attitude is good for games in general. I don't think we're an industry of widgets. I don't think we can approach it like we approach bars of soap, where you're just trying to make the cheapest bar of soap".

Afsluttende siger Schafer, at han håber Kotick skifter branche. "He could go to an industry that makes more money. Ball bearings... Something that suits his passions more. Weapons manufacturing?"
